Why your Google Business Profile isn’t showing in the map pack

If you search your own service and your business does not appear in the three-result map box, one of a handful of things is usually wrong. Here is how to work out which.

What the map pack actually is

The map pack is the box of three businesses Google shows above the normal results for anything local. It is where most calls come from. Ranking first in the regular blue links but nowhere in the map pack means most people never see you.

Most are missing three.5Website backing it upEvery service you want to rank for needs a page about it.

Your categories are wrong or too broad

This is the most common cause and the easiest to fix. Google picks map pack results largely on your primary category. A commercial HVAC company set to the generic "Contractor" category will lose to one set to "HVAC contractor" every time. Pick the most specific primary category that matches what you sell, then add secondaries.

You are outside the search radius

Google shows results near the searcher. If your address is fifteen minutes outside the area you want work from, you will struggle there no matter what else you do. This is not fixable with keywords — it is fixable with service area settings, and by earning enough authority that Google widens your radius.

Your reviews have stalled

Recency matters, not just volume. A business with 40 reviews spread across the last year usually outranks one with 90 reviews that all stopped two years ago. If your last review is old, that is a live problem.

The profile is half-finished

Hours, service list, photos, service area, description, products, Q&A. Google rewards completeness. Most local profiles we audit are missing at least three of those, and the fix takes an afternoon.

Your website does not back it up

Google cross-checks your profile against your site. If your listing says commercial HVAC and your website has no page about commercial HVAC, the signal is weak. Every service you want to rank for should have a page about it.

The short version: Work through those in order — categories, radius, reviews, completeness, website. In our experience the first and last account for most of the problem.
